In 2014, I embarked on a creative project titled "Sardines", which involved painting sardines during the time of the popular saints' celebrations in Lisbon. This project was deeply rooted in the rich cultural traditions of Lisbon's popular saints festivals, especially Santo António, São João, and São Pedro.
The sardine, or "sardinha" in Portuguese, holds a special place in the hearts of Lisbon's residents during the popular saints' festivities, which typically occur in June. These festivals are a vibrant celebration of Portuguese culture and heritage, marked by lively street parties, music, dancing, and delicious food. Sardines are a quintessential element of this culinary tradition and symbolize the essence of these festivities.
