OVERVIEW
Summer Energy is a conceptual project developed for my Master’s degree in Illustration (LABASAD). The inspiration came from playing with references to classic horror films while blending them with surf and skate culture.
The goal was to capture the raw, playful tension between the eerie and the fun, mixed with the carefree, sun-burned energy of summer — long days, loud colors, and that feeling of endless motion.
The color palette was intentionally designed to feel aged and imperfect, inspired by old prints and hand-painted illustrations, almost as if it were colored with markers. Slightly rough, bold, and saturated, the colors bring a nostalgic, DIY feeling that connects back to vintage skate graphics and retro horror posters.
CONCEPT & VISUAL DIRECTION
Sunburned days, salty air, loud laughs.
Summer Energy is all about that raw summer rush: surf breaks, street heat, and nonstop good vibes. Inspired by classic horror movies, the ocean, skate culture, and playful characters, these visuals capture summer at full volume.
Bold colors, wild shapes, and a carefree attitude that doesn’t slow down when the sun goes down. No rules. Just chill.
It’s Santa Cruz summer, turned all the way up.
SKETCHES
arly explorations focused on character design, strong silhouettes, and expressive details that could translate effectively to skate graphics and merchandise.
APPLICATIONS
The goal here was to showcase how the illustrations can live across different products while maintaining a strong and consistent visual identity.
Multiple applications were explored, including skateboard decks, t-shirts, sticker packs, and tote bags. Each item highlights the boldness and personality of the artwork, demonstrating its versatility and how naturally it fits within skate and street culture.
The illustrations were designed to feel impactful both as statement pieces and as everyday merch.
